They can be extremely popular in the summer months. We camped at Fallen Leaf Campground, which is Forest Service run. If you plan to visit the lakes in the summer, I would suggest going as early as possible. The views are spectacular and the lakes are pristine. There is a small parking fee at the parking lot just prior to the path to the lakes. Follow that road and either make a left on Tahoe Mountain Road and then a right on Angora Ridge Road or follow Fallen Leaf to the end of the lake where you can catch the trail up to Angora Lakes.Įarly or late in the summer season, Angora Ridge Road will be closed, but when the gate is open you can drive the road, rather than have to hike it. At the “Y”, take a right onto Highway 89 and follow that just past Camp Richardson. Situated at an elevation of 7800 feet, Susie Lake makes a good mid-summer and fall destination for fishing. From South Lake, follow Highway 50 towards the “Y”. Susie Lake is great overnight destination in the Desolation Wilderness.There are two convenient ways to approach the lake, one from the head of Fallen Leaf Lake and the other from the Echo Lakes trailhead. Unfortunately, the left side is Angora where the fire has decimated much of the forest.Įither starting location is pretty easy to get to. Its an easy, flat, 1.3mile (1-way) scenic trail through the forest to a narrow dam bridge, and beyond it, if desired. The ridge, however to your right is absolutely beautiful peering into Fallen Leaf Lake and looking up at massive Mount Tallac. Not only do you get to enjoy one beautiful lake, but there are two awesome lakes when hiking into Angora.
